Neptune Beach (click to see Neptune Beach real estate listings) sits quaintly among the four Jacksonville beaches communities: Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach. It is situationally in the northern part of the bunch. Beginning on A1A from the south end where the Jacksonville Beach city limits end, the compact city is about 2.5 square miles, ending at its lively and homey
nest of the Beaches Town Center (at the Atlantic Boulevard main stoplight). Trickled down a series of distinct and ladylike-named streets to the left and right, are beach homes, duplexes, quad-plexes, and more. About 7,500 residents call this area, between the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Intracoastal Waterway on the west, home. Incorporated in 1931, Neptune Beach strives to be a top-notch residential area, with high standards and strict safety efforts.
The ensuing peace of mind of living here, along with the optional recreation and nightlife nearby, make it a ‘best of both worlds’ location. Services such as groceries, brand retail stores, drugstores, banks, eateries, and physicians offices are all in walkable distance. Small business parks line the west side of the main A1A road, while mini plazas line the beach side, offering casual dining options and convenient shops. The streetscape is more communal than the other beaches communities , with homes opening up to the streets in a visible fashion. Despite the lack of actual structured neighborhoods in Neptune Beach, one feels as if they’re in one.
Neptune Beach runs by a City Manager-Council form of government. Residents play a huge part of the decision-making here, by way of city meetings. Neptune Beach City Hall and Police Department are located a convenient few hundred feet away from most residents, amidst the socially budding Lemon, Orange, and Cherry Streets . The city is served by Neptune Beach Elementary, A-rated Fletcher Middle, and Fletcher High Schools. The Beaches Regional branch of the Jacksonville Public Library is located here, and together, these latter institutions hold many community events.
Green and natural living are cornerstones of this tiny beach town. The community’s Jarboe Park stays occupied, with residents enjoying its basketball courts, playground, picnic tables, and large open-air space. The local Beaches Green
Market held at the park sheds light on sustainable farming with organic produce every Saturday. A community horticulture garden is also present, with purchasable plots and instructional workshops. Small and personal yoga and pilates studios are dotted along the main road, and bikes are about as common a transport mode as cars here. The beach is also a popular leisure activity 365 days a year, for its close proximity and the city’s subtropical climate.
For nightlife, shopping, and dining, residents look no further than Neptune and Atlantic Beach’s shared Beaches Town Center. The Lemon Bar, voted the “Best Happy Hour” and “Favorite Bar” for three years is an ever popular place. Down the street, enjoy fresh local seafood, and the infamous Pete’s Bar, a favorite pool hall since 1933, and home of “Pete’s Thanksgiving Day” where locals pile in on the holiday for all-day cheers.
If living among a beach culture poses too many cons than pros for you, for issues of safety, privacy, lack of nearby resources, and noise level, Neptune Beach will make you reconsider that. Your home is safe, your environment mellow, your needs nearby, and the night sleep and sound.
