The San Marco (click to see San Marco real estate listings) neighborhood of Jacksonville, formerly part of the City of South Jacksonville, sits south of downtown, across the St. Johns River. Marked by some of the city’s most bold architectural feats, its residences, buildings, and
unique visage remain significant. A compact collection of Mediterranean-Revival-style homes, main corridor San Marco Square, and walkable streetscapes, San Marco is a historic and diverse urban community.
Atlantic Boulevard, Philips Highway, and I-95 all run through San Marco, leading north of the city, into downtown via the Acosta Expressway and Main St. bridge, eastbound to the beach, and southbound to neighboring San Jose. Find homes along beautiful Marco Lake, the area’s west boundary, on residential streets branching off main Hendricks Avenue, and in several gated subdivisions. Single- and multi-family homes are prevalent, and the price range vast. Tudor-style houses, all-brick bungalows, and two-story colonials, almost all renovated, characterize this charming community.
Hendricks Avenue Elementary, Landon and DuPont Middle, and Wolfson High schools are all zoned for the neighborhood. Jacksonville Public Library’s San Marco Branch serves the area, and the adjoining Balis Community Center features classrooms, a conference room, and a small auditorium for education, business, and recreation. Play is plentiful at San Marco’s 14 public parks. Main FEC Park is some 15 acres of multi-use fields and a canopy of oaks, pines, and palms.
San Marco Square was an original build in the growth of South Jacksonville in the 1930s. An integrated, artsy square, it’s a commercial gem in urbanized shopping centers. Casual eateries, wine and juice bars, fine-dining, bookstores, and salons are among the many retailers in this open-air layout. Shopping galore can be done in the high-fashion, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and fitness studio Dance Trance’s global showcase location is here. Come dusk, nightlife shines; dancing at Square One, cocktails at Taverna, and movies at the historic San Marco Theatre . Several events take place year-round in the square, from holiday lighting, San Marco Fashion Week, sidewalk sales, and the monthly ‘Affair in the Square’.
Main San Marco Boulevard, a north/south arterial separating downtown from San Marco Square, was one of the urban core’s early commercial districts. Currently under a complete section-by-section makeover, the boulevard is home to many points of interest in the neighborhood; Baptist Medical Center, Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute, Southbank Riverwalk, Friendship Fountain and the Museum of Science & History (MOSH). Improved, widened sidewalks have made for swank outdoor seating, landscaping, and a walking oasis.
A stronghold of residents work together here via the San Marco Preservation Society, ensuring neighborhood growth, success, and integrity. They coordinate community forums, ‘Concerts in the Park’, clean-ups, and beautification projects, among others. Its newsletter, along with the neighborhood’s own San Marco Magazine, keep residents informed.
